As they always say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that which one person finds beautiful or admirable may not appeal to another. And others believe that it is not about having the fairest skin or prettiest face. It is about having the purest heart.! But, let’s be honest here, it’s still important for us women to have a dewy, glowing, radiant fair skin right? And when it comes to skincare, Asians -particularly Koreans- are known for that.

Koreans and most Asians take care of their skin in an almost religious way, a technique that can be tough to learn at first, as this requires a lot of products and procedures, but worth 100% the effort. Honestly, one of the best things I have learned living in Asia is loving my skin and giving it more love and attention.

Morning Routine Tips

Step 1: Wash with water

First thing in the morning, cleanse your skin with only water, not a cleanser. Water removes the few impurities that settle on the face during the night and keeps skin hydrated, too.

Step 2: Toner

To balance the skin’s pH levels, it’s important to apply toner like Rosewater Facial Toner – for oily skin to get the vibrant, youthful and clear skin. Otherwise, the skin can become dry and dehydrated. Toner further helps to absorb the next products you apply.

Step 3: Essences, Ampoule or Serum

Essence is a hybrid between a toner and a serum. It works perfectly to hydrate the complexion, aiding cellular turnover for a youthful appearance. This is because essences contain impressively high doses of active ingredients, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, meant to intensely nourish the skin post-cleanse and prep it for any oils, ampoules, or serums that should come after.

Similar to serums, ampoules actually comprise a higher number of active ingredients to target specific skin care concerns like wrinkles, dark spots, and dehydration. They’re used for a finite amount of time as a booster when your skin badly needs the extra intensive treatment. Both use after cleansing and toning. How should you use either essences, ampoules or serum depends on your skin. You can use them every day when your skin is battling brutal breakouts or dryness or once a week for a little boost.

Important Note:

According to k-beauty experts, an essence and a serum are essentially the same things. There are only some important warnings to pay attention to:

  • Essences are traditionally been more lightweight and less concentrated than serums and were used after a toner to add another layer of hydration before you applied serums.
  • Serums are getting more lightweight and essences are getting thicker, but they both contain high concentrations of active ingredients.

Meaning, both essence and serums/ampoules are used at the same treatment step of skincare to achieve similar results. It’s just the marketing strategy that separates them.

Step 4: Eye cream

Smooth a light eye cream across both the brow and socket bone moving from the inner to outer corner of the eye. Here, the skin is at its thinnest as there are no sebaceous glands to produce natural oils, so it’s important to keep this area hydrated and protected all day long.

My Top Suggested Products:

The skin around our eyes is the most sensitive area on our faces, and it also tends to be one of the first places where signs of premature aging show up first. This is why so many women invest in specialized skincare products – specifically eye creams.

Step 5: Moisturizer (day)

Next, apply a soothing and lightweight moisturizer that blends easily into your skin without leaving it feeling greasy for long-lasting all-day hydration. Your skin will thank you for being fed the right thing at the right time.

Step 6: Sunscreen

Applying sunscreen shouldn’t be reserved for the summer holidays. Protecting the skin on a daily basis from UV rays will avoid the development of dark spots, wrinkles, and fine lines.

My Top Suggested Products:

This is the reason why most Asian women have such amazing skin because they don’t play around when it comes to sun protection. They were taught to wear sunscreen every day from an early age. As they say, you can spot Asians and point them out in the crowd as they wear wide hats or umbrellas just to protect their skin. And this is why you’ll notice that most sunscreen contains an SPF of no less than 50, which is the norm.

Evening Routine Tips

Step 1: Oil-based cleanser

For the evening, select an oil-based cleanser to start with as this will work to remove oil-based makeup and impurities from the skin.

My Top Suggested Products:

Step 2: Double-cleansing

Following the oil cleanser, use a water-based cleanser like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser – (best recommended) to gently remove the oil residue and water-based impurities from the day.

Step 3: Exfoliate

Twice a week use a gentle enzyme or bead-based exfoliator to remove the dead skin cells that can make the complexion appear lackluster whilst blocking pores and preventing key product ingredient absorption

My Top Suggested Products:

  • For dry skin – Neostrata Resurface Face Cream PlusCorrects the visible signs of photoaging hydrating dry, rough skin and targeting enlarged pores, dullness, and rough texture
  • For Oily Skin – MD Complete Clarifying MaskExfoliates to reveal a healthier, clearer complexion. Clears & prevents breakouts, brightens and evens complexion.

In the same morning manner, next, apply a toner to balance the skin’s pH levels.

Step 5: Essence or Ampoule/Serum

Apply your essence to hydrate the complexion followed by this supercharged serum at night, that can make your skin absorb all the hydration it needs following a long day’s work.

Step 6: Sheet mask

The sheet mask is a Korean beauty favorite – AND I AM OBSESSED WITH THEM! – a cloth saturated with skin loving ingredients! Perfect for all skin types, everyone can benefit from these masks which deliver a deeply hydrating and anti-aging treatment.

My Top Suggested Products:

  • SK II Facial Treatment Mask – This award-winning Japanese sheet mask takes your skin to the next level of crystal clear. A blend of vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and organic acids work together to allow the skin’s natural surface rejuvenation process to function at its prime. You will love it!

Step 7: Eye cream

Once the skin has absorbed the ingredients from the sheet mask, apply an eye cream to protect and hydrate the delicate eye area.

Step 8: Moisturizer (Night)

Lastly, select a night time moisturizer to keep those skin loving ingredients locked in, allowing you to wake to a beautifully rejuvenated complexion.

My Top Suggested Products:

Golden Rule: is to Hydrate, Exfoliate, Skin Care means suncare, plus a good hygiene and healthy eating habits.

Few Exceptions:

  • If you notice that a combination of products you’re using tends to roll or ball up when you apply one right after the other, then it’s probably best to allow the first product to dry before applying the next product in your routine.
  • When you’re using gentle, well-formulated skincare products (and you should be), then in most circumstances, waiting is more about personal preference than necessity.
